The Chilean Origins of Red Bull Cerro Abajo

The story of Red Bull Cerro Abajo began in 2003, when a group of mountain bike enthusiasts turned the steep “cerros” of Valparaíso, Chile, into a spectacular urban racing stage. That first event marked the birth of the world’s most iconic urban downhill race. Narrow alleys, colorful staircases, and handrails became the features of a unique and extreme MTB course. Over the years, the event grew in popularity, with legendary wins by riders like Sebastián Vásquez and Antonio Leiva, drawing thousands of spectators and establishing Cerro Abajo as a symbol of action sports worldwide.

From Valparaíso to the World

The success in Chile sparked a global wave: Red Bull expanded the format to other steep and scenic cities, launching the international Cerro Abajo series. After stops across Latin America – including Guanajuato in Mexico – the event made a historic leap in 2024 with its first European edition in Genoa, Italy. The city’s narrow alleyways, sharp staircases, and dramatic slopes created a natural downhill course. Genoa’s unique mix of urban charm and rugged terrain offered an unforgettable setting for both riders and fans from all over the world.

The 2024 Genoa Debut

Genoa’s debut was nothing short of electrifying: 2.2 km of pure downhill, 279 meters of vertical drop, and speeds of over 70 km/h. Czech rider Tomáš Slavík claimed the victory with a time of 2:42.505, just ahead of Colombian Juanfer Vélez. Thirty-two athletes from fifteen countries took on the course, cheered on by a crowd that filled every stair and corner. Behind the scenes, dozens of volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure safety and organization. The media coverage was massive, cementing Genoa’s status as Europe’s new urban downhill capital.
